Background

APOA2 is the second most abundant protein in HDL particles and is involved in stabilizing HDL structure and influencing cholesterol metabolism. It plays a role in modulating HDL remodeling, impacting the balance between cholesterol efflux and lipid delivery. APOA2 has a controversial role in cardiovascular health, with studies showing both pro-atherogenic and anti-atherogenic effects depending on genetic variants and lipid context. Elevated APOA2 levels have been linked to obesity, insulin resistance, and metabolic syndrome, while deficiencies can impair HDL stability and function. APOA2 interacts with enzymes like hepatic lipase and proteins such as CETP (cholesteryl ester transfer protein), which regulate lipid exchange and metabolism. Its dual role in lipid homeostasis and metabolic health highlights its significance in cardiovascular disease and metabolic disorders.
