Description

Plays a role in the outgrowth of motoneurons and in the formation of neuromuscular junctions. Following muscle denervation, promotes nerve terminal sprouting and the formation of additional acetylcholine receptor clusters at synaptic sites without affecting terminal Schwann cell number or morphology. Delays the retraction of terminal sprouts following re-innervation of denervated endplates. May play a role in targeting the monocarboxylate transporters SLC16A1 and SLC16A7 to the cell membrane(By similarity).

Descripción

Embigin (EMB) Embigin is a transmembrane glycoprotein belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily, primarily involved in cell adhesion and signaling. It is expressed in a variety of tissues, including developing muscle and epithelial cells, where it contributes to cellular interactions with the extracellular matrix (ECM). Embigin interacts with components of the ECM, such as integrins and laminins, to modulate processes like cell migration, differentiation, and tissue morphogenesis. Additionally, embigin has been implicated in metabolic regulation by influencing monocarboxylate transporters (MCTs), which are critical for lactate and pyruvate transport in metabolic tissues. Its expression is dynamically regulated during development and in response to cellular stress, with aberrant levels linked to cancer progression and metastasis, where it may enhance tumor cell invasion through ECM remodeling. Structurally, embigin contains immunoglobulin-like domains that facilitate its interactions with cellular and ECM components, highlighting its role as a mediator of cellular and environmental communication.
