Description
The protein encoded by this gene interacts with inositol 1, 4, 5-trisphosphate receptor, type 1 and may be involved in the conversion of S-adenosyl-L-homocysteine to L-homocysteine and adenosine. Several transcript variants encoding two different isoforms have been found for this gene.

Descripción
AHCYL1, also known as inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate receptor binding protein (IRBIT), is structurally similar to AHCY but lacks catalytic activity. Instead, it functions as a regulator of calcium signaling and ion transport. AHCYL1 binds to inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate receptors (IP3Rs), modulating calcium release from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), and interacts with transporters such as the sodium-bicarbonate cotransporter (NBCe1) to regulate intracellular pH and bicarbonate levels. It is expressed in various tissues, including the kidneys, brain, and pancreas, where it influences processes such as fluid secretion, neuronal excitability, and electrolyte balance. Dysregulation of AHCYL1 has been linked to diseases such as kidney disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, and cystic fibrosis, highlighting its importance in calcium and ion homeostasis.
