Descripción
ALKBH8 is a unique member of the ALKB family that functions as a tRNA methyltransferase and oxidative repair enzyme. It catalyzes the methylation of specific nucleotides in tRNA, particularly wobble uridine residues, ensuring proper tRNA stability, codon recognition, and accurate translation. ALKBH8 also possesses RNA repair activity, where it oxidatively repairs methylated lesions in tRNA, ensuring the maintenance of functional tRNA pools. This dual function makes ALKBH8 critical for maintaining translational fidelity and cellular protein synthesis.
