Descripción
Alanine-glyoxylate aminotransferase 2 (AGXT2) is a mitochondrial enzyme that participates in the metabolism of amino acids, including the reversible conversion of glyoxylate and alanine to pyruvate and glycine. AGXT2 plays a role in cardiovascular health by metabolizing dimethylarginines, including asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), an inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase and a biomarker for cardiovascular diseases. By reducing ADMA levels, AGXT2 contributes to the regulation of nitric oxide production and endothelial function. Dysregulation of AGXT2 is implicated in hypertension, atherosclerosis, and metabolic syndromes. In addition, AGXT2's role in glyoxylate metabolism links it to oxalate production, suggesting potential contributions to kidney stone formation and renal dysfunction in certain pathological contexts.
