Descripción

ADAD1 is a member of the adenosine deaminase domain-containing family, primarily expressed in the testis, where it plays a significant role in RNA metabolism, particularly in the regulation of RNA stability and processing during spermatogenesis. This protein is thought to bind double-stranded RNA, influencing the stability and translation of specific mRNA transcripts critical for germ cell development. Its expression is tightly regulated, reflecting its importance in meiotic progression and gametogenesis. Although ADAD1 shares a conserved adenosine deaminase domain, its enzymatic activity toward adenosine is not well characterized, suggesting its role may primarily be structural or regulatory in RNA binding rather than catalytic. Dysregulation or mutations in ADAD1 have been implicated in male infertility due to disrupted spermatogenic processes. Its testis-specific expression underscores its specialized function in reproductive biology.
