Descripción
ACOT4 is a peroxisomal enzyme that hydrolyzes medium- and long-chain acyl-CoA esters into free fatty acids and CoA, contributing to the regulation of peroxisomal β-oxidation and lipid metabolism. It is expressed in tissues involved in lipid processing, such as the liver and kidney, where it participates in detoxifying acyl-CoA intermediates and modulating lipid signaling pathways. ACOT4 plays a key role in the breakdown of branched-chain fatty acids and bile acid intermediates, processes essential for maintaining cellular lipid homeostasis. By regulating the levels of peroxisomal CoA and free fatty acids, ACOT4 influences cellular metabolic efficiency and prevents lipid toxicity. Dysregulation of ACOT4 has been implicated in metabolic syndromes and fatty acid-related disorders, emphasizing its role in maintaining peroxisomal and systemic lipid balance. Its enzymatic function supports metabolic adaptability during dietary shifts and stress conditions, underscoring its importance in lipid metabolism and cellular homeostasis.
