ELISA, WB, IHC, FCM
Description
This gene encodes a member of the acyl-CoA thioesterase family which catalyse the conversion of activated fatty acids to the corresponding non-esterified fatty acid and coenzyme A. Expression of a mouse homolog in brown adipose tissue is induced by low temperatures and repressed by warm temperatures. Higher levels of expression of the mouse homolog has been found in obesity-resistant mice compared with obesity-prone mice, suggesting a role of acyl-CoA thioesterase 11 in obesity. Alternative splicing results in transcript variants.

Background
ACOT11, also known as BFIT (Brown Fat-Inducible Thioesterase), is a cytosolic enzyme involved in the hydrolysis of medium- and long-chain acyl-CoA esters, with a specific role in thermogenesis and energy expenditure. It is highly expressed in brown adipose tissue, where it regulates fatty acid mobilization and provides substrates for heat production through mitochondrial uncoupling. ACOT11 plays a crucial role in lipid metabolism during periods of cold exposure or metabolic stress, ensuring an adequate supply of free fatty acids for β-oxidation and thermogenic activity. In addition to its role in brown fat, ACOT11 is expressed in other tissues, where it contributes to lipid signaling and metabolic homeostasis. Dysregulation of ACOT11 has been implicated in metabolic syndromes such as obesity and insulin resistance, making it a potential target for therapies aimed at enhancing energy expenditure and combating metabolic diseases.
