Background
ACSS1 is a mitochondrial enzyme that activates short-chain fatty acids, primarily acetate, by converting them into acetyl-CoA, which serves as a substrate for the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, lipid synthesis, and protein acetylation.
