Background
ACTL7B is closely related to ACTL7A and is also expressed exclusively in the testis. It is essential for spermatid elongation and nuclear condensation during late spermatogenesis. Structurally, ACTL7B contains conserved actin domains but lacks the polymerization capacity seen in conventional actins. It interacts with chromatin remodeling factors to ensure proper histone-to-protamine transition in spermatids. Loss or mutations in ACTL7B can impair spermatid differentiation, resulting in male infertility. Its specialized function highlights the diversity of actin-like proteins in reproductive biology.
