Descripción

HTR3B is another subunit of the 5-HT3 receptor that assembles with HTR3A to form functional heteromeric ligand-gated ion channels. While HTR3A is essential for channel formation, HTR3B modulates the channel's electrophysiological properties, including conductance and ion permeability. This subunit is expressed in the central nervous system and gastrointestinal tract, playing a significant role in regulating emetic responses, anxiety, and nociception (pain signaling). Variants of the HTR3B gene have been linked to increased susceptibility to psychiatric conditions, including major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder. Research has also implicated HTR3B in contributing to alcohol dependence and related behavioral traits, as it modulates reward pathways in brain regions like the nucleus accumbens. Additionally, HTR3B participates in serotonin-induced gastrointestinal motility, affecting disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Targeting HTR3B, either independently or in combination with HTR3A, has provided avenues for developing novel therapies to manage nausea, vomiting, and chronic pain, making it a key focus in drug development for neuropsychiatric and gastrointestinal disorders.
