Background
AGPAT4 is an enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of phosphatidic acid (PA) by acylating lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) at the sn-2 position. It is localized to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and participates in the production of key phospholipids and triglycerides necessary for membrane synthesis and lipid signaling. AGPAT4 is expressed in multiple tissues, with high levels in the brain, suggesting a role in neural lipid metabolism. It is also implicated in lipid remodeling, which affects membrane fluidity and vesicular trafficking. Dysregulation of AGPAT4 has been linked to altered lipid homeostasis and metabolic disorders, though its specific physiological and pathological roles require further study.
