Zinc Finger MIZ-Type Containing 1 (ZMIZ1) is a transcriptional co-activator and a member of the PIAS-like (protein inhibitor of activated STAT) family which regulates transcription by interacting with transcription factors and chromatin-modifying proteins ZMIZ1 contains a MIZ domain that mediates protein-protein interactions and is involved in enhancing the activity of androgen receptors (AR) SMAD proteins and p53 signaling pathways It contributes to cell proliferation and differentiation particularly in immune cells and hematopoietic stem cells Aberrant expression or mutations in ZMIZ1 have been associated with cancers such as leukemia and breast cancer due to its role in activating oncogenic pathways ZMIZ1 is also implicated in autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus and multiple sclerosis where it influences T-cell activation and immune tolerance highlighting its role in transcriptional regulation and immune homeostasis
