Background

Spermidine/Spermine N1 Acetyltransferase 2 (SAT2) is a lesser-studied acetyltransferase enzyme that shares functional similarities with SAT1 in catalyzing the acetylation of polyamines like spermidine and spermine Although SAT2 has a lower expression profile compared to SAT1, it participates in regulating intracellular polyamine levels and influences their transport and breakdown Emerging evidence suggests SAT2 is involved in cellular responses to stress and apoptosis, particularly under conditions where polyamine metabolism is disrupted Dysregulation of SAT2 expression may contribute to cancer progression, as polyamine catabolism is critical for controlling cell proliferation, survival, and metabolic adaptation Studies also indicate that SAT2 plays a role in modulating oxidative stress and mitochondrial function, linking its activity to cellular homeostasis and stress responses While its precise physiological roles are still being defined, SAT2’s involvement in polyamine metabolism underscores its importance in maintaining cellular growth and metabolic balance
