Descripción

This gene encodes retinoic acid receptor beta, a member of the thyroid-steroid hormone receptor superfamily of nuclear transcriptional regulators. This receptor localizes to the cytoplasm and to subnuclear compartments. It binds retinoic acid, the biologically active form of vitamin A which mediates cellular signalling in embryonic morphogenesis, cell growth and differentiation. It is thought that this protein limits growth of many cell types by regulating gene expression. The gene was first identified in a hepatocellular carcinoma where it flanks a hepatitis B virus integration site. The gene expresses at least two transcript variants; one additional transcript has been described, but its full length nature has not been determined. [provided by RefSeq].

Background

Retinoic acid receptor beta (RARB) is another member of the retinoic acid receptor family that regulates gene expression in response to retinoic acid It plays a significant role in controlling cellular processes such as differentiation, growth, and apoptosis, particularly in tissues like the retina, lung, and skin RARB functions by forming heterodimers with RXR and binding to RAREs, where it modulates the expression of genes involved in various biological processes, including the development and maintenance of the central nervous system and the immune system It is particularly important for vision and retinal function, where it helps in the differentiation of photoreceptor cells Retinoic acid signaling through RARB also affects cancer development, as altered RARB expression has been linked to tumor progression, particularly in lung, breast, and colon cancers In addition, changes in RARB signaling have been implicated in autoimmune diseases and neurological disorders, highlighting its importance in both immune function and nervous system development
