Descripción
RAB42, member RAS oncogene family (RAB42) is another member of the RAB family of small GTPases that plays a key role in vesicular trafficking. RAB42 is primarily involved in regulating the movement of vesicles from the Golgi apparatus to endosomal compartments, as well as in the recycling of membrane proteins. This protein helps ensure the proper sorting and transport of cellular components such as proteins, lipids, and other molecules, facilitating processes like endocytosis, exocytosis, and receptor recycling. In neurons, RAB42 has been shown to contribute to the trafficking of synaptic vesicles, playing a crucial role in neurotransmitter release and synaptic plasticity. Dysregulation of RAB42’s function can lead to disruptions in vesicular trafficking and protein homeostasis, contributing to cellular dysfunction. Its role in the regulation of membrane-bound proteins links RAB42 to diseases such as cancer, where abnormal vesicular trafficking and altered receptor signaling drive tumor growth and metastasis. Additionally, RAB42 is involved in autophagy, which is vital for cellular quality control, and its malfunction may contribute to neurodegenerative disorders, where impaired autophagic processes lead to the accumulation of damaged proteins and organelles, ultimately resulting in cell death.
