Descripción
PTPRO, also known as GLEPP1, is a receptor-type protein tyrosine phosphatase involved in kidney function, immune regulation, and tumor suppression. Structurally, PTPRO contains extracellular Ig-like and fibronectin type III domains, a transmembrane segment, and two intracellular phosphatase domains. PTPRO is highly expressed in podocytes, specialized cells in the kidney glomerulus, where it regulates podocyte cytoskeletal organization and filtration barrier integrity. It also functions in immune cells by modulating signaling pathways related to lymphocyte activation. PTPRO has been identified as a tumor suppressor, as its loss or downregulation is associated with cancers such as lung, breast, and colorectal cancers. In the kidney, PTPRO mutations or dysfunction contribute to glomerular diseases, including nephrotic syndrome. Its role in cell growth regulation and tissue homeostasis underscores its biological importance.
