Descripción
PTGER2, or EP2, is a G protein-coupled receptor activated by prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), a major lipid mediator involved in inflammation, immune modulation, and tissue repair. EP2 primarily couples to Gs proteins, leading to the activation of adenylate cyclase, increased cAMP levels, and downstream signaling that modulates cell survival, vasodilation, and immune responses. EP2 is expressed in immune cells, vascular smooth muscle, and epithelial tissues, where it promotes anti-inflammatory effects, smooth muscle relaxation, and vasodilation. In the central nervous system, EP2 mediates neuroprotection and contributes to synaptic plasticity. Dysregulation of EP2 signaling has been linked to inflammatory diseases, neurodegeneration, and cancer, where EP2 activation enhances tumor growth and immune evasion. EP2 agonists are being explored for their neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties, while antagonists are being investigated to inhibit tumor progression and chronic inflammation, particularly in conditions such as arthritis and neurodegenerative disorders.
