Descripción

AMY2A, also known as pancreatic alpha-amylase, is an enzyme produced primarily in the pancreas, where it is secreted into the small intestine to continue the digestion of starch and glycogen. AMY2A hydrolyzes polysaccharides into maltose, maltotriose, and other smaller oligosaccharides, providing energy substrates for absorption and metabolism. It is a key enzyme in postprandial glucose regulation, supporting efficient carbohydrate digestion and nutrient absorption. AMY2A levels are commonly measured in clinical diagnostics as a marker of pancreatic function, particularly in conditions such as acute pancreatitis, pancreatic duct obstruction, and pancreatic cancer. Elevated AMY2A levels in serum or urine are indicative of pancreatic damage or inflammation. Variants in the AMY2A gene and abnormal amylase activity have also been linked to metabolic disorders such as obesity and diabetes, where altered carbohydrate digestion contributes to hyperglycemia and energy imbalance.
