Background

OPRD1, also known as the delta-opioid receptor, is a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) activated by endogenous opioid peptides such as enkephalins. It is expressed in the central nervous system (CNS), including the cortex, limbic system, and spinal cord, where it modulates pain perception, mood regulation, and neuroprotection. OPRD1 couples to Gi/o proteins, inhibiting adenylate cyclase activity, reducing cAMP levels, and modulating ion channel activity to decrease neuronal excitability.
