Background
Nucleoporin 42 (NUP42), also known as NupL1, is a component of the nuclear pore complex (NPC), which regulates the bidirectional transport of macromolecules such as RNA and proteins between the nucleus and cytoplasm. NUP42 is specifically associated with the cytoplasmic face of the NPC and plays a critical role in mRNA export and other transport pathways. It interacts with the CRM1 export receptor, facilitating the export of certain cargoes during cellular stress responses and viral infections. Mutations or dysregulation of NUP42 can affect nucleocytoplasmic transport, contributing to cellular senescence, developmental defects, and diseases such as cancer and neurodegenerative disorders. Understanding its function provides insights into the dynamics of nuclear-cytoplasmic communication and the mechanisms underlying related pathologies.
