Descripción
CHRM2 encodes the cholinergic receptor muscarinic 2, which is another member of the G protein-coupled receptor family and primarily couples to Gi/o proteins. Activation of CHRM2 leads to inhibition of adenylate cyclase, thereby reducing intracellular cyclic AMP (cAMP) levels and leading to decreased cellular excitability. CHRM2 is expressed in the heart, brainstem, and vagus nerve, where it plays a key role in modulating cardiovascular function and parasympathetic nervous system activity. In the heart, CHRM2 activation slows heart rate by reducing the firing rate of sinoatrial (SA) node cells, a mechanism vital for maintaining resting heart rate and promoting vagal tone. In the brain, CHRM2 is implicated in processes related to cognition, mood regulation, and stress response, making it relevant for disorders such as depression and anxiety. Genetic variations in CHRM2 have been associated with cognitive performance and psychiatric conditions, including alcohol dependence. Pharmacologically, CHRM2 antagonists are used in cardiac treatment to counteract excessive parasympathetic activity, while selective agonists may have potential therapeutic applications in improving memory function and treating mood disorders.
