Descripción

CHRM2 Antibody is a Rabbit Polyclonal antibody against CHRM2. The muscarinic cholinergic receptors belong to a larger family of G protein-coupled receptors. The functional diversity of these receptors is defined by the binding of acetylcholine to these receptors and includes cellular responses such as adenylate cyclase inhibition, phosphoinositide degeneration, and potassium channel mediation. Muscarinic receptors influence many effects of acetylcholine in the central and peripheral nervous system. The muscarinic cholinergic receptor 2 is involved in mediation of bradycardia and a decrease in cardiac contractility. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants have been described for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008].

Background

CHRM2 encodes the cholinergic receptor muscarinic 2, which is another member of the G protein-coupled receptor family and primarily couples to Gi/o proteins. Activation of CHRM2 leads to inhibition of adenylate cyclase, thereby reducing intracellular cyclic AMP (cAMP) levels and leading to decreased cellular excitability. CHRM2 is expressed in the heart, brainstem, and vagus nerve, where it plays a key role in modulating cardiovascular function and parasympathetic nervous system activity. In the heart, CHRM2 activation slows heart rate by reducing the firing rate of sinoatrial (SA) node cells, a mechanism vital for maintaining resting heart rate and promoting vagal tone. In the brain, CHRM2 is implicated in processes related to cognition, mood regulation, and stress response, making it relevant for disorders such as depression and anxiety. Genetic variations in CHRM2 have been associated with cognitive performance and psychiatric conditions, including alcohol dependence. Pharmacologically, CHRM2 antagonists are used in cardiac treatment to counteract excessive parasympathetic activity, while selective agonists may have potential therapeutic applications in improving memory function and treating mood disorders.
