Descripción
ABCC4, also known as multidrug resistance-associated protein 4 (MRP4), is an ATP-binding cassette transporter expressed in various tissues, including the liver, kidneys, and endothelial cells of the blood-brain barrier. It exports a wide range of substrates, including cyclic nucleotides, prostaglandins, antiviral drugs, and chemotherapeutic agents, from cells. ABCC4’s activity plays a critical role in cellular signaling by regulating intracellular levels of cyclic AMP and GMP. It is also involved in drug resistance, where its overexpression limits the intracellular accumulation of therapeutic agents. ABCC4 is upregulated in response to oxidative stress and inflammation, highlighting its role in protecting cells from toxic insults. Its diverse substrate specificity and involvement in drug efflux make ABCC4 a significant target in pharmacological research and disease management.

ABC proteins transport various molecules across extra- and intra-cellular membranes. ABC genes are divided into seven distinct subfamilies (ABC1, MDR/TAP, MRP, ALD, OABP, GCN20, White). This protein is a member of the MRP subfamily which is involved in multi-drug resistance. This family member plays a role in cellular detoxification as a pump for its substrate, organic anions. It may also function in prostaglandin-mediated cAMP signaling in ciliogenesis. Alternative splicing of this gene results in multiple transcript variants.
