Microfibril-Associated Protein 3-Like (MFAP3L) is a protein structurally related to MFAP3, sharing homology in domains involved in microfibril assembly and extracellular matrix (ECM) interactions. However, MFAP3L appears to have distinct expression patterns and biological functions. It is predominantly expressed in tissues with significant mechanical demands, such as the vasculature, lung, and connective tissues, suggesting a role in maintaining tissue elasticity and structural stability. MFAP3L contains conserved cysteine-rich domains, which allow it to form stable interactions with ECM proteins like fibrillin and elastin. These interactions are crucial for the proper assembly and stabilization of microfibrils, which are key components of elastic fibers. MFAP3L may also regulate the biomechanical properties of tissues, contributing to their strength and elasticity under mechanical stress. MFAP3L is implicated in microfibril development and maintenance of elastic fibers. It likely supports the organization of fibrillin-rich microfibrils, facilitating their role in tissue resilience.
