Microfibril-Associated Protein 3-Like (MFAP3L) is a protein structurally related to MFAP3, sharing homology in domains involved in microfibril assembly and extracellular matrix (ECM) interactions. However, MFAP3L appears to have distinct expression patterns and biological functions. It is predominantly expressed in tissues with significant mechanical demands, such as the vasculature, lung, and connective tissues, suggesting a role in maintaining tissue elasticity and structural stability. MFAP3L contains conserved cysteine-rich domains, which allow it to form stable interactions with ECM proteins like fibrillin and elastin. These interactions are crucial for the proper assembly and stabilization of microfibrils, which are key components of elastic fibers.
