LRRC55 is an auxiliary subunit of large-conductance calcium-activated potassium (BK) channels found in smooth muscle and neuronal tissues where it modulates channel function by regulating calcium sensitivity and voltage gating this regulation is essential for processes such as smooth muscle contraction neuronal excitability and neurotransmitter release studies have linked LRRC55 to the control of vascular tone and neurophysiological processes suggesting its importance in conditions such as hypertension epilepsy and stroke emerging evidence indicates that LRRC55 may influence sperm function and fertility as it regulates ion channels critical for motility ongoing research is focused on its role in channelopathies and its potential as a therapeutic target for disorders related to dysregulated BK channel activity
