LRRC17 is a secreted protein that plays a role in modulating bone remodeling and immune responses by acting as a negative regulator of receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand (RANKL) signaling it inhibits osteoclast differentiation and activity thereby contributing to bone homeostasis its expression in osteoblasts and other stromal cells is upregulated during bone remodeling processes making it an important factor in maintaining bone density and preventing osteoporotic conditions LRRC17 has also been implicated in cancer metastasis particularly to the bone as its dysregulation can create an osteolytic environment supportive of tumor progression it is expressed in various tissues where it modulates immune responses through interactions with cytokines and receptors although its precise mechanism in immune regulation is not fully understood studies have linked LRRC17 to the modulation of chronic inflammatory states and tumor microenvironments research continues to focus on its dual role in bone biology and cancer to identify therapeutic strategies for bone-related diseases and metastatic cancers
