Descripción
LRRC1 plays a vital role in cellular processes such as cytoskeletal organization and signal transduction, particularly within epithelial cells where it contributes to maintaining polarity and adherens junctions. Found predominantly in intestinal tissues, LRRC1 interacts with scaffolding proteins to stabilize E-cadherin-based complexes, which are crucial for epithelial barrier integrity. Dysfunction of LRRC1 has been associated with disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colorectal cancer, as it regulates pathways like Wnt signaling and epithelial restitution after injury. Emerging studies have also indicated that LRRC1 may modulate tight junction assembly, influencing permeability and immune responses in the gut. Its role extends to being a potential marker for epithelial dysfunction, and its overexpression or loss has been implicated in epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) processes linked to cancer progression. While its precise role in cancer biology remains underexplored, LRRC1's involvement in maintaining homeostasis makes it a promising candidate for therapeutic interventions targeting epithelial integrity in chronic gastrointestinal diseases and cancer.
