Background

Cleavage stimulation factor subunit 2 (CSTF2) is a critical component of the cleavage stimulation factor (CstF) complex, required for the 3' end processing of pre-mRNAs through cleavage and polyadenylation. CSTF2 contains an RNA recognition motif (RRM) that specifically binds to GU-rich elements downstream of the cleavage site, ensuring accurate mRNA maturation and stability. CSTF2 interacts with CSTF1 and CSTF3 to form the heterotrimeric CstF complex, which assembles on the pre-mRNA substrate to facilitate the recruitment of other cleavage factors. Its expression is cell-cycle regulated, with levels peaking during the transition from G0 to S phase, indicating its role in cell proliferation and growth. CSTF2 also influences alternative polyadenylation, a process that regulates mRNA isoform diversity and contributes to cellular differentiation and responses to environmental signals.
