Aldo-Keto Reductase Family 1, Member C6 (AKR1C6) is a member of the AKR superfamily of enzymes that reduce aldehydes and ketones to their corresponding alcohols, playing essential roles in steroid hormone metabolism and detoxification of reactive carbonyl compounds. AKR1C6 is primarily expressed in the liver and reproductive tissues, where it contributes to the metabolism of prostaglandins and androgens, regulating hormone signaling and lipid homeostasis. It is also involved in maintaining redox balance by neutralizing reactive aldehydes generated from lipid peroxidation. Dysregulation of AKR1C6 has been associated with metabolic imbalances, oxidative stress, and certain hormone-dependent cancers. Research into AKR1C6 focuses on its role in steroid-related diseases and its potential as a therapeutic target in conditions involving oxidative damage and hormonal dysregulation.
