Aldo-Keto Reductase Family 1 Member C13 (AKR1C13) belongs to the AKR superfamily, which is involved in the reduction of aldehydes and ketones, particularly in steroid hormone metabolism. AKR1C13 is primarily expressed in liver and reproductive tissues, where it plays a role in the biosynthesis and inactivation of androgens and progestins. It contributes to the regulation of hormone receptor signaling, lipid metabolism, and detoxification of reactive aldehydes generated from lipid peroxidation. Dysregulation of AKR1C13 has been implicated in hormone-related disorders and oxidative stress-associated diseases. Research into AKR1C13 is focused on its potential as a therapeutic target in cancer and endocrine diseases, where alterations in steroid metabolism are critical factors.
