Aldehyde Dehydrogenase Family 1, Subfamily A7 (ALDH1A7) is an enzyme that plays a critical role in the oxidation of aldehydes into their corresponding carboxylic acids, contributing to cellular detoxification and metabolic regulation. Although closely related to other ALDH1A isoforms involved in retinoic acid biosynthesis, ALDH1A7’s exact physiological function remains less well-characterized. It is predominantly expressed in liver and other detoxifying tissues, where it aids in metabolizing reactive aldehydes derived from alcohol metabolism, lipid peroxidation, and environmental toxins. Dysregulation of ALDH1A7 activity has been associated with oxidative stress, which can lead to liver dysfunction, inflammation, and cancer development. Emerging research suggests a potential link between ALDH1A7 expression and the progression of hepatocellular carcinoma, as altered aldehyde metabolism influences tumor growth and chemoresistance. ALDH1A7 is a subject of growing interest for its role in detoxification pathways and its implications in oxidative stress-related diseases and oncology.
