Descripción
Acyl-CoA Thioesterase 5 (ACOT5) is a mitochondrial enzyme that hydrolyzes long-chain fatty acyl-CoA molecules, primarily involved in regulating lipid metabolism and mitochondrial function. By releasing CoA and free fatty acids, ACOT5 helps maintain CoA availability for essential metabolic processes, including β-oxidation and the tricarboxylic acid cycle. ACOT5 plays a critical role in energy homeostasis, particularly under fasting conditions or during high-energy demands. It is expressed in metabolically active tissues such as the liver, heart, and skeletal muscle. Dysregulation of ACOT5 activity can contribute to mitochondrial dysfunction, lipid accumulation, and metabolic syndromes such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
