Descripción

Meteorin-like protein (METRNL) shares structural similarity with Meteorin and is secreted primarily by adipose tissue and muscle, where it plays a role in energy metabolism and inflammation. METRNL has been identified as a myokine and adipokine that promotes thermogenesis in beige adipocytes by inducing the expression of uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) and activating macrophages to secrete IL-4 and IL-13. This process enhances energy expenditure and improves metabolic health, making METRNL a potential therapeutic target for obesity and metabolic syndrome. Additionally, METRNL exhibits anti-inflammatory properties, modulating immune responses in adipose tissue and skeletal muscle during exercise or metabolic stress. Recent research indicates its involvement in tissue repair and regeneration, particularly in response to injury or disease, through its interaction with signaling pathways like AMPK and MAPK.
