Descripción
ACSL6 is a long-chain acyl-CoA synthetase that preferentially activates polyunsaturated fatty acids, such as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and arachidonic acid, by converting them into acyl-CoA derivatives. It is predominantly expressed in the brain, erythrocytes, and testes, where it supports specialized lipid metabolism required for neuronal function, erythrocyte membrane integrity, and spermatogenesis. In the brain, ACSL6 plays a crucial role in synthesizing and maintaining membrane lipids enriched with polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are essential for synaptic plasticity and neuronal communication. Dysregulation of ACSL6 has been linked to neurodegenerative diseases, such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, as well as hematological disorders due to its involvement in erythrocyte lipid composition. Its activity underscores its importance in maintaining cellular lipid homeostasis, particularly in tissues with high polyunsaturated fatty acid content.
