Descripción
LRRC56 is a leucine-rich repeat-containing protein that functions as a critical regulator of cilia motility by facilitating the assembly of axonemal dynein arms, which are required for the beating of motile cilia. It localizes to the ciliary structure and interacts with proteins involved in dynein arm assembly and transport, enabling the proper function of motile cilia in tissues such as respiratory epithelium, brain ependyma, and reproductive organs. LRRC56 is essential for the coordinated beating of cilia, contributing to mucus clearance, fluid movement, and sperm motility. Mutations in LRRC56 are associated with primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD), a condition characterized by chronic respiratory infections, reduced fertility, and hydrocephalus due to defective ciliary motility. Knockout studies reveal disrupted dynein arm assembly, immotile cilia, and impaired fluid movement, highlighting its critical role in ciliary function and the maintenance of tissue homeostasis.
