Descripción

Interleukin 16 (IL16) is a pro-inflammatory cytokine that plays a critical role in immune system regulation, particularly in the recruitment and activation of immune cells such as CD4+ T cells, eosinophils, monocytes, and dendritic cells. It functions as a chemoattractant, orchestrating immune cell migration to sites of inflammation and infection, and thus facilitating the body's defense mechanisms. IL-16 is unique in that it acts primarily through its interaction with the CD4 receptor, which is widely expressed on various immune cells. It also modulates the activity of these cells, influencing both innate and adaptive immune responses. Originally identified for its ability to attract CD4+ T cells, IL-16 was subsequently found to have broader roles, including immune cell activation, modulation of cytokine production, and inhibition of viral replication. This has made IL-16 an important factor in various inflammatory conditions, such as asthma, allergic responses, and autoimmune diseases.
