Background

Integrin Subunit Alpha X (ITGAX), commonly referred to as CD11c, is a member of the integrin family that dimerizes with ITGB2 to form the CR4 receptor. ITGAX is highly expressed on dendritic cells and is used as a hallmark marker for this cell type. It mediates cell adhesion, migration, and antigen presentation by enabling dendritic cells to interact with the extracellular matrix and other immune cells. ITGAX also participates in phagocytosis and immune responses against pathogens by functioning as a complement receptor. Its role in immune regulation makes it a focus in studies of chronic inflammatory diseases, atherosclerosis, and cancer immunology. The protein's expression is also commonly analyzed in histological studies to evaluate dendritic cell populations in various tissues.
