Description

Provides, together with MAGI1, an adhesion machinery at tight junctions, which may regulate the permeability of kidney glomerulus and small intestinal epithelial cells. Mediates calcium-independent homophilic cell adhesion. In testis, it may function as a cell adhesion molecule rather than a tight-junction protein. It may participate in the adhesion between spermatogonia-spermatogonia, spermatogonia-Sertoli cells, and Sertoli cells-Sertoli cells (By similarity).

Descripción

IGSF5, also known as Junctional Adhesion Molecule-Like (JAML), is a transmembrane protein involved in immune responses and epithelial integrity. It contains immunoglobulin (Ig)-like domains that mediate interactions with other adhesion molecules and receptors. IGSF5 is expressed in epithelial cells and immune cells, such as γδ T cells, where it facilitates cell adhesion and immune surveillance. Functionally, IGSF5 contributes to tissue repair, immune cell activation, and barrier integrity. Dysregulation of IGSF5 is linked to inflammatory diseases and tissue damage, particularly in the gut and skin.
