Background
IGSF11 is a transmembrane adhesion molecule primarily expressed in the brain, where it is localized at excitatory synapses. It contains Ig-like domains that mediate homophilic and heterophilic interactions with other synaptic proteins, influencing synaptic organization and plasticity. IGSF11 is essential for the stabilization of AMPA receptors, which are critical for synaptic transmission and long-term potentiation (LTP). Dysregulation of IGSF11 has been implicated in neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and schizophrenia. It also plays a role in tumor biology, where it modulates cancer cell adhesion and migration in certain cancers.
