Descripción
SIGLEC16 is a relatively recent addition to the Siglec family and is highly similar to SIGLEC11. It is primarily expressed in myeloid cells, where it functions as an activating receptor. SIGLEC16 interacts with sialylated ligands to mediate inflammatory responses. The gene encoding SIGLEC16 exhibits a polymorphic pseudogenization pattern in humans, with some individuals lacking a functional protein. SIGLEC16 has been implicated in amplifying immune responses to infections and inflammatory conditions, although its exact physiological roles remain under investigation.
