RAB44, member RAS oncogene family (RAB44) is a GTPase involved in intracellular vesicle trafficking, particularly in the regulation of endosomal sorting and recycling. Like other RAB family members, RAB44 plays an important role in controlling the movement of proteins, lipids, and other molecules within cells, ensuring their proper localization. This protein is involved in the trafficking of vesicles from early endosomes to recycling endosomes, a crucial step for maintaining membrane homeostasis and receptor function. RAB44's activity in these pathways also ensures the regulation of various cellular processes, such as nutrient uptake, immune response, and receptor signaling. Alterations in RAB44 function have been associated with diseases where vesicle trafficking is disrupted, including cancers and neurodegenerative disorders. In these conditions, malfunction of RAB44 can lead to aberrant signaling, improper protein sorting, and loss of cellular integrity. Moreover, RAB44 is believed to play a role in the regulation of autophagy, a process essential for cellular quality control. Defects in this pathway may lead to the accumulation of damaged organelles and proteins, which can contribute to cell death and disease progression.
