SERPINA5, also known as protein C inhibitor (PCI), is a member of the serpin (serine protease inhibitor) superfamily. This gene encodes a protein that plays a crucial role in the regulation of proteolytic processes, particularly those involved in the coagulation and fibrinolysis pathways. Located on chromosome 14q32.13, the SERPINA5 gene is part of the SERPIN family, which is characterized by its ability to inhibit serine proteases through a conserved reactive center loop (RCL) mechanism. SERPINA5 is primarily expressed in the liver, but it is also found in a wide range of tissues, including the kidney, testis, and seminal plasma. The protein encoded by SERPINA5 is involved in the inhibition of several key proteases, including activated protein C, which plays a critical role in the regulation of blood coagulation
