GABA-A receptor associated protein like protein 3 (GABARAPL3) is a member of the GABARAP family, which plays a crucial role in intracellular trafficking and autophagy. GABARAPL3 is involved in the trafficking and anchoring of GABA-A receptors to the neuronal membrane, thereby influencing inhibitory synaptic transmission. Beyond its role in receptor trafficking, GABARAPL3 is an important mediator in the autophagy-lysosome pathway, participating in the formation and elongation of autophagosomes, which are essential for cellular homeostasis and degradation of damaged proteins or organelles. GABARAPL3 interacts with various autophagy-related proteins, such as LC3 and ATG8, facilitating the recruitment of molecular machinery necessary for autophagosome maturation. Dysregulation of GABARAPL3 activity has been linked to neurodegenerative diseases and cancer, highlighting its importance in maintaining cellular health.
