Descripción
FSTL4 is a secreted glycoprotein that belongs to the SPARC family of extracellular matrix-associated proteins, which are involved in regulating cell signaling, differentiation, and tissue remodeling. FSTL4 contains a follistatin-like domain that enables it to interact with members of the TGF-β superfamily, particularly bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs), modulating their activity in processes such as neural development and synaptic plasticity. It is predominantly expressed in neural tissues, including the brain and spinal cord, where it regulates neuronal signaling and connectivity. FSTL4 also plays a role in maintaining neural integrity and has been implicated in protecting neurons from excitotoxicity, a process linked to neurodegenerative diseases. Dysregulation of FSTL4 expression has been associated with cognitive deficits, as well as potential links to neuropsychiatric disorders such as autism spectrum disorder. Its structural features, including calcium-binding EF-hand domains, further enhance its regulatory roles in extracellular matrix interactions and cellular signaling pathways.
