Background

FSTL4 is a secreted glycoprotein that belongs to the SPARC family of extracellular matrix-associated proteins, which are involved in regulating cell signaling, differentiation, and tissue remodeling. FSTL4 contains a follistatin-like domain that enables it to interact with members of the TGF-β superfamily, particularly bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs), modulating their activity in processes such as neural development and synaptic plasticity. It is predominantly expressed in neural tissues, including the brain and spinal cord, where it regulates neuronal signaling and connectivity.
