Background

Butyrophilin like 10 pseudogene (BTNL10P) is a non-coding pseudogene that belongs to the butyrophilin-like family, which is part of the immunoglobulin superfamily involved in immune regulation. Unlike functional butyrophilin genes, BTNL10P does not encode a protein due to mutations or truncations in its sequence. While pseudogenes are often considered non-functional, some have regulatory roles, influencing gene expression through transcriptional interference or acting as decoys for microRNAs. BTNL10P's precise function, if any, remains to be fully elucidated, but its evolutionary conservation suggests a potential role in modulating immune-related processes. Ongoing research focuses on identifying pseudogenes' contributions to immune homeostasis and disease susceptibility, particularly in autoimmunity and cancer.
