ATP Binding Cassette Subfamily C Member 5 (ABCC5), also known as multidrug resistance-associated protein 5 (MRP5), plays a crucial role in the transport of various substrates across cellular membranes. This protein is part of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter family and utilizes ATP hydrolysis to facilitate the export of organic anions and cyclic nucleotides like cGMP and cAMP from cells. ABCC5 is expressed in multiple tissues, including the liver, kidneys, and brain, where it contributes to cellular detoxification and protection against xenobiotics and endogenous metabolites. Furthermore, ABCC5 is implicated in drug resistance, particularly in cancer therapy, by actively exporting chemotherapeutic agents, thereby reducing their intracellular accumulation.
