Descripción

Arachidonic acid (AA) is a polyunsaturated omega-6 fatty acid that plays a central role in inflammation and cellular signaling. It is a key component of phospholipids in cell membranes and is released by phospholipase A2 upon stimulation by various signals. Once released, AA serves as a precursor for the biosynthesis of eicosanoids, including prostaglandins, thromboxanes, and leukotrienes, through enzymatic pathways involving cyclooxygenases (COX), lipoxygenases (LOX), and cytochrome P450 enzymes. These eicosanoids are involved in processes such as inflammation, vasodilation, platelet aggregation, and immune responses. Dysregulation of AA metabolism is implicated in inflammatory diseases, cardiovascular disorders, and cancer. AA also influences membrane fluidity and protein function, highlighting its importance in cellular homeostasis and signaling.
