Alpha-2-Macroglobulin Like Protein 1 (A2ML1) is a member of the alpha-2-macroglobulin (A2M) family, which includes protease inhibitors with diverse biological functions. A2ML1 is primarily expressed in epithelial tissues and has emerged as a significant player in protease regulation, innate immunity, and the maintenance of epithelial integrity. Like other members of the A2M family, A2ML1 is a broad-spectrum protease inhibitor that can trap and inhibit proteolytic enzymes, including those secreted by pathogens or released during tissue injury.The gene encoding A2ML1 is located on chromosome 12p13.31 in humans, and its protein product is highly conserved across species, indicating its importance in biological processes. A2ML1 has been implicated in skin homeostasis and disorders, as well as in innate immune responses. This protein is gaining attention due to its structural and functional similarities to A2M and its potential roles in pathological conditions, such as cancer, inflammation, and infectious diseases.
